Europe 1968 Fifty Years On: France, Germany & Italy

2018 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the protests of 1968, when social unrest and desire to change the status quo impacted Europe.

Did Europe change after 1968? Was it a turning point in history? Did the Sixties, for which it is often shorthand, change society and culture?

In history, it is often suggested that dramatic events (the French Revolution, the Great War, World War II) changed societies, removing or undermining aristocracies and elites.

Did 1968 do this in European and Western societies … only decades before the waves of globalisation?

Did the social movements which arose in this turbulent era change the world over the next half century? Or was 1968 a moment? A cyclical event rather than a structural change?

This special event will consider these questions with reference to France, Germany and Italy.
