The European Studies Association Australia and New Zealand (ESAANZ) invites you to this free online event about the European Union Recovery Fund.
On the 21st of July EU leaders agreed a deal on the recovery package and the European budget for 2021-2027. Meeting physically in Brussels, EU leaders agreed on a €750 billion recovery effort to help the EU tackle the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and on a €1074 billion long-term EU budget for 2021-2027. EU Members debated the composition of the package and whether it should come in the form of grants or loans. The package will help the EU rebuild in the wake of the COVID-19 crises. The presenters will discuss what the agreement is, how it will function and, its protocols and outcomes. Also, who this deal benefits and who provided leadership and why.

About the speakers
Dr. Remy Davison: Dr. Remy Davison holds the Jean Monnet Chair in Politics and Economics (2012–2015). In 2010, he was appointed a UN Global Expert. He is the former Acting Director and Associate Director of the Monash European and EU Centre. He was Visiting Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre, European University Institute, in 2015. He is frequently asked to deliver confidential briefings and expert evidence to Australian and overseas diplomats, international organizations (IO) and Parliamentary inquiries. In 2018, Dr. Davison keynoted the Beijing conference of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), the IO established to implement a free trade agreement between the People’s Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
Dr. Nina Markovic: Dr Nina Markovic Khaze (PhD, MAIR-MDip, ANU; BA/Hons UWA) has been analysing EU affairs since 2000. She has been lecturing in International Relations and Security first at UNSW and now at Macquarie University. Before joining academia, she was working for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library as a Senior Researcher on Europe and Middle East from 2007 to 2014, advising and speech writing daily for the Presiding Officers, Members and Senators and taking parliamentary delegations overseas. She is a member of ESAANZ, AACaPS and former Vice-President of AIIA’s ACT Branch.

The event attracted over 60 registrations with over 40 people attending on the day. Running for the full allotted time, the presenters gave an interesting and in-depth analysis of the EU recovery fund which garnered much discussion among attendees.
