Conference theme: A path forward for Europe: pursuing peace, justice and hope
At times of heightened military confrontation in Ukraine and the Middle East, the ideas of peace, justice and hope seem like precious commodities. The most basic assumptions of the progressive and democratic vision of Europe and the European Union have been called into question, embodied in the resurgence of populist and right-wing parties across the continent. The ongoing war in Ukraine has again brought political realism to the forefront in military, economic and diplomatic thinking. At the same time, however, the resilience and perseverance of the Ukrainian people has sustained hope, mobilizing political and social activity and support against Russian aggression. The European Union’s future-oriented policies on climate, cybersecurity and AI continue to articulate the need for integrated action. And at the global level, a just transition has been called for to secure peace, prosperity and the sustainability of our planet.
In this context, the ESAANZ 2024 conference will focus on the complexities of continuing challenges and transformations in Europe and its neighbourhood from a variety of perspectives: politics, economy, environment and society. The conference organizers invite papers across the broad spectrum of disciplines relating to Europe in these transformative times.
